Position Overview

Our organization is actively looking for a full-time Section Chief of Gastroenterology to join our team at Riverside University Health System. We encourage applications from individuals with a background in General Gastroenterology.

Key Responsibilities

The Gastroenterology Section Chief will oversee the leadership, management, and administration of the GI Division at RUHS. This role encompasses:

  • Endoscopy services
  • Outpatient and inpatient clinical activities
  • Teaching and mentoring
  • Research initiatives

This position requires collaboration with the Head of GI at our affiliated university to achieve the institution's objectives and mission.

Clinical Duties

The role includes a mix of inpatient responsibilities along with outpatient endoscopy and clinic work. All facilities, including the clinic and endoscopy suites, are conveniently located on-site, eliminating the need for commuting. We allocate dedicated time each week for professional and leadership development during outpatient weeks. Active participation in the education of fellows, residents, and students is a key expectation.

Team Structure

The Gastroenterology Division at RUHS consists of three physicians and four advanced practice providers, one of whom will assist during inpatient weeks. Our focus spans a wide range of community-based GI specialties, including:

  • General GI
  • Pancreatic biliary
  • Third space endoscopy
  • Hepatology
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Motility disorders
Work Environment

We foster a collegial and productive atmosphere that prioritizes patient care and education. Our facility is equipped with advanced technologies such as GI Genius, Capsule Endoscopy, Manometry (including Endo Flip), Smart Pill, and BRAVO, along with a fleet of Olympus 190s, including EUS and ERCP scopes.

Interventional Gastroenterology

We have established capabilities in Interventional Gastroenterology, including:

  • POEM
  • Endoscopic suturing
  • ESD
  • Spyglass
  • Hybrid APC

Onsite research support is available for both clinical and population-based studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Dedicated anesthesia coverage is also provided.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to serving underserved populations and will primarily work at the RUHS location. For candidates with administrative expertise, there may be opportunities for leadership roles in academic settings or GI endoscopy operations. Our hospital administration is highly supportive, and our clinical partners are collaborative, ensuring a conducive environment for productive physicians.

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary for this position ranges from $475,000 to $550,000. This figure does not include additional compensation for inpatient call during weekdays and weekends, e-consults, or specialized clinics. Productivity bonuses exceeding the base WRVU target are distributed bi-annually, and data on procedure volumes is available. Additional compensation may be offered for candidates eligible for leadership roles, as mentioned earlier.
