SECTION CHIEF, HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGYVA PROVIDENCE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Location: Providence, RI

Our organization is seeking applications for the position of Section Chief of Hematology-Oncology. This full-time clinical role is set within a prestigious academic VA environment in New England, aimed at experienced hematologist oncologists. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the expert evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing management of patients with hematological and oncological conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Key responsibilities include comprehensive clinical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic tests, palliative care consultations, therapeutic phlebotomy, bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, serial tumor evaluations, and the selection and administration of chemotherapy across various modalities.

Clinical Settings:

Clinical privileges will be granted at the VA Providence Healthcare System and associated Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), subject to adequate staffing and the availability of necessary equipment. Telemedicine and E-Consult services are accessible to all Credentialed and Privileged Licensed Independent Practitioners.

Core Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate, diagnose, consult, and manage the medical treatment of hematology/oncology patients, including general medical conditions encountered during their care.
  • Admit patients to inpatient units or appropriate care levels as needed.
  • Conduct thorough history and physical examinations.
  • Order and provide initial interpretations of EKGs, imaging studies, and laboratory tests.
  • Offer palliative care consultations.
  • Select, initiate, and administer chemotherapy for cancer treatment through all therapeutic routes.
  • Assess tumor imaging using CT, MRI, PET, and nuclear imaging techniques.
  • Perform serial measurements of tumor mass.
  • Conduct bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures.
  • Order therapeutic phlebotomy when clinically necessary.
Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, operating Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, hold an M.D. or D.O. degree, and possess a full, active, and unrestricted medical license in any state.
