Situated about 75 miles northwest of Washington, DC, and approximately 85 miles from Baltimore, Maryland, Martinsburg, WV is renowned for its outdoor recreational opportunities and its proximity to the Potomac River. This city is among the fastest-growing in the state.
At our organization, we provide a wide array of services at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental care, nursing home services, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health, and rehabilitation medicine. We deliver patient care through an integrated primary care model, ensuring that each veteran is assigned to a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who oversee their care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
We are currently looking for a Full-time Hematology Oncologist to join our Specialty Care Medical Service team. This physician will report directly to the Hematology Oncology Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:- Participate in clinical activities as determined by the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff's clinical privileging process.
- Deliver direct patient care, including the evaluation and treatment of hematology/oncology patients, deciding on hospital admissions or outpatient management, and overseeing chronic disease management.
- Conduct comprehensive initial medical and psychosocial histories along with physical examinations.
- Order and manage appropriate diagnostic tests.
- Review and interpret diagnostic results, taking necessary actions based on findings.
- Document and record diagnostic impressions accurately.
- Refer patients for consultations within the VA and community as needed.
- Provide clinical advice to patients, families, and other healthcare providers via phone, secure messaging, or mail to coordinate care and offer education.
- Ensure thorough documentation of medical assessments, interactions, and observations.
- Supervise and educate medical residents and students.
- May oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
- Enter orders into the CPRS system for medications, consultations, and testing.
- Foster interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships to optimize patient care.
- Exhibit effective oral and written communication skills, providing necessary education to patients and their families.
- Adhere to hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring antiseptic methods are used in all clinical procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or Chief of Specialty Care Medicine.
Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Compensation:We offer a competitive salary, an annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off:- 50–55 days of paid time off annually, including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and potentially 5 days for continuing medical education (CME).
- Traditional federal pension with a 5-year vesting period and a federal 401K plan with contributions up to 5% from the organization.

Must possess one full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory.
CME:Eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time and board certified).

Contractual Information:No Physician Employment Contract is required, and there are no significant restrictions on moonlighting.
Basic Qualifications:- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA policy.
- Medical degree (Doctor of Medicine or equivalent) from an accredited institution recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Current, unrestricted medical or surgical license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to board certification eligibility.
- Proficiency in both spoken and written English.
Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology is highly desirable.
