Overview
The role of Physician (Sleep Medicine) is situated at our medical center in Honolulu, HI.
About the Role: This position is part of the Directorate of Medicine within the Sleep Laboratory at our facility in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The island of Oahu, often referred to as "The Gathering Place," is the most densely populated island in Hawaii. Honolulu serves as the largest city, the state capital, and the primary deep-water port for Hawaii. While the entire island falls under Honolulu County, the city itself occupies only a section of the southeastern part of Oahu. Notable attractions on the island include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Kane’ohe Bay, Kailua Bay, the North Shore, and the resort area of Ko’Olina.
Oahu is also famous for experiencing the longest recorded rain shower, lasting 200 consecutive days. Kane’ohe Ranch documented 247 days of continuous rain from August 27, 1993, to April 30, 1994. The average temperature on the island ranges from 70 to 85 °F (21 to 29 °C), with the warmest months being June through October. Winters are milder, with temperatures averaging between 68 and 78 °F (20 to 26 °C).
Responsibilities
Main Duties:
Act as the leading expert in all aspects of sleep medicine.
Incorporate the latest scientific findings on sleep, interpret professional guidelines, and provide education to fellow healthcare providers.
Formulate policies and guidelines related to sleep evaluations.
Utilize discretion in interpreting guidelines to enhance the program and patient care.
Conduct examinations, diagnoses, and treatments for a diverse range of outpatients in the clinic.
Identify multiple chronic conditions and various sleep and respiratory disorders, including complex diagnoses and treatments.
Oversee cases that often involve intricate conditions requiring sophisticated diagnostic and testing methods.
Order and assess a comprehensive array of tests, including polysomnography, actigraphy, sleep diaries, unattended sleep studies, relevant radiographic tests, pulmonary function tests, and laboratory tests as necessary.
Provide supervision, education, and consultation to other healthcare professionals, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows.
Engage directly with staff from the Office of The Surgeon General (OTSG) to plan and coordinate sleep medicine services and address operational challenges.
Offer expert guidance not only to program providers but also to the Commanding General and OTSG regarding sleep health issues affecting senior leaders and their broader healthcare implications.
Serve as the primary Sleep Medicine Physician; board certification or a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sleep Medicine is preferred.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Qualifications
Eligibility: Open to U.S. Citizens
To qualify, candidates must fulfill the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be considered. Your resume should clearly detail your relevant experience; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements for Physician (Sleep Medicine):
Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. A foreign medical degree must demonstrate equivalency to accredited U.S. programs, evidenced by permanent certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: A copy of your transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency must be included with your application.)
Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted license as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited hospital or institution.
In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must also meet the following qualifications:
Residency, Experience, and Training: Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited residency in the relevant specialty (Sleep Medicine) and possess equivalent experience and training totaling at least 4 years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training for this specialty.
Salary Information: If selected for the Physician position, a salary quote will not be provided at the time of the initial job offer. The salary determination process will commence after the job offer is accepted, involving the Activity Compensation Panel to establish base pay and market pay for your starting salary, which will be communicated once approved. Physician salaries are based on a tier scale determined by specialty, grade, and location.
Foreign Education: If you are utilizing education from foreign institutions to meet qualification requirements, you must provide evidence that your educational credentials have been evaluated by a recognized organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign education programs, confirming that they are equivalent to those from accredited U.S. programs; or that full credit has been granted for courses at a U.S. accredited institution.
