We are in search of a talented trauma surgeon to become part of our medical education team as the Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program. In this pivotal role, you will lead and manage our residency program at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center, both situated in the Chicagoland area. Additionally, you will provide clinical services as a trauma surgeon at our busy Level I trauma center. Your expertise will be vital in shaping the future of our program and nurturing the next generation of surgeons.

This is a full-time position, allocating .5 FTE to the Program Director responsibilities and .5 FTE to your clinical duties as a trauma/surgical critical care surgeon.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop, implement, and sustain a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with ACGME standards and prepares residents for independent surgical practice.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes for new residents.
  • Conduct regular assessments of residents and faculty, ensuring timely feedback and documentation.
  • Coordinate educational initiatives across both hospital locations to maintain consistency and quality in training.
  • Engage in scholarly activities.
  • Facilitate faculty development and promote engagement in the educational mission.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, wellness, and inclusivity within the residency program.
  • Encourage resident participation in scholarly activities and research.
  • Ensure program accreditation by adhering to institutional and ACGME policies.
  • Lead the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and provide guidance to the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Ensure the residency program maintains good standing with ACGME and the organization's GME office.
  • Keep accurate and current program documentation, including resident files, evaluations, and curricular materials.
  • Address resident concerns and performance issues promptly and constructively.
  • Report program outcomes and improvement initiatives to institutional leadership.
  • Guarantee equitable and adequate clinical exposure and operative experience for all residents.
  • Uphold ethical standards and cultivate a safe, respectful learning environment.
  • Monitor and manage program resources, including faculty time and educational budgets, as necessary.
ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Join a nationally recognized integrated organization with a physician-led medical group and embedded service line.
  • Utilize DAX Copilot, an AI-driven clinical documentation tool integrated with Epic, to streamline clinical workflows by generating draft patient notes for efficient review and editing.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • The ideal candidate will have completed an accredited general surgery residency program and a fellowship in trauma/surgical critical care; however, we are also open to candidates from other surgical specialties. Our aim is to find a dynamic, dedicated professional who is passionate about advancing their career and making a meaningful impact on our young surgeons.
  • Board certification with a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, including at least 3 years in a core faculty or other GME leadership role.
  • Strong leadership, relationship-building, and collaboration skills are essential for this position.
