This position emphasizes high-quality, protocol-driven care within a specialized Observation Unit:
Observation Unit ServicesThorough evaluation, management, and discharge planning for adult observation patients
Adhere to evidence-based protocols for prevalent conditions such as chest pain, syncope, heart failure exacerbations, COPD/asthma, cellulitis, and dehydration
Conduct histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and coordinate patient care
Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, specialists, and case management for safe and timely discharges
Focus on adult patients requiring short-term observation (generally less than 48 hours), covering a wide range of conditions typically encountered in Family Medicine:
Acute exacerbations of chronic illnesses (CHF, COPD, diabetes)
Evaluation of chest pain and syncope
Management of infectious conditions (cellulitis, UTI, pneumonia)
Assessment of minor abdominal pain, headaches, and other non-specific complaints
Post-procedure or transitional care requirements
High-capacity observation unit with a focused patient census
Streamlined workflow prioritizing timely evaluations and patient dispositions
Balanced daily workload supported by a strong team
Chance to educate medical students and residents through the upcoming School of Osteopathic Medicine
Engagement in quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, and scholarly activities
Full-time hospital-based schedule with designated Observation Unit shifts
Consistent hours focusing on daytime coverage
Shared on-call responsibilities within the Hospital Medicine and Observation teams
Dedicated nursing and support staff within the Observation Unit
Close collaboration with the Emergency Department, Hospitalists, and specialists
Multidisciplinary team dedicated to optimizing patient flow and minimizing unnecessary hospitalizations
