Clinical Responsibilities

This position emphasizes high-quality, protocol-driven care within a specialized Observation Unit:

Observation Unit Services
  • Thorough evaluation, management, and discharge planning for adult observation patients

  • Adhere to evidence-based protocols for prevalent conditions such as chest pain, syncope, heart failure exacerbations, COPD/asthma, cellulitis, and dehydration

  • Conduct histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and coordinate patient care

  • Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, specialists, and case management for safe and timely discharges

Patient Demographics

Focus on adult patients requiring short-term observation (generally less than 48 hours), covering a wide range of conditions typically encountered in Family Medicine:

  • Acute exacerbations of chronic illnesses (CHF, COPD, diabetes)

  • Evaluation of chest pain and syncope

  • Management of infectious conditions (cellulitis, UTI, pneumonia)

  • Assessment of minor abdominal pain, headaches, and other non-specific complaints

  • Post-procedure or transitional care requirements

Typical Clinical Volume
  • High-capacity observation unit with a focused patient census

  • Streamlined workflow prioritizing timely evaluations and patient dispositions

  • Balanced daily workload supported by a strong team

Academic & Faculty Opportunities

Work Schedule & On-Call Duties
  • Full-time hospital-based schedule with designated Observation Unit shifts
