Our organization, located in the picturesque Rockport, Maine, is actively looking for a Gastroenterologist to take on the role of Medical Director. This leader will collaborate with practice administrators to oversee both the administrative and clinical functions of the Gastroenterology department, ensuring high standards of care, patient safety, and satisfaction for patients, providers, and staff, while optimizing resource utilization. The Medical Director will address the needs of clinicians and care team members across both primary and secondary practice sites, aligning their efforts with our mission, vision, values, strategic objectives, and organizational goals.

The role will involve a combination of clinical and administrative responsibilities. Clinical duties will encompass outpatient services, endoscopic procedures, and inpatient consultations.

Qualifications:

  • MD/DO degree from an accredited medical institution.
  • Possession of an active and unrestricted medical license in the State of Maine, or the ability to obtain one prior to starting.
  • Board Certification or Eligibility.
  • Active and unrestricted DEA license, or the ability to secure one before employment.
  • Experience in performing general endoscopic procedures; skills in EUS/ERCP are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of clinical practice is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operations: Oversee the clinical operations of the Gastroenterology practice and its outreach locations by collaborating with administrative leaders and care team heads. Focus areas include budget management, patient scheduling, clinical protocols, and EPIC workflow integration.
  • Supervision: Directly manage physicians and advanced practice professionals, emphasizing patient experience, professionalism, compliance with documentation and billing, productivity, mentoring, peer reviews, and annual evaluations.
  • Quality/Safety: Promote quality initiatives and implement safety programs to reduce risks.
  • Planning/Outreach: Collaborate with MHMG to expand clinical services where necessary and actively participate in recruitment efforts across all sites.
  • Education: Support the education of care team members, learners, and new physicians and APPs within the practice.
  • Leadership Development: Foster the growth of Associate Medical Directors to enhance their leadership capabilities.

Primary Duties:

  • Provide clinical Gastroenterology services, including outpatient care, endoscopy, and inpatient consultations.
  • Collaborate closely with administrative leaders and physicians to ensure the smooth operation and performance of the practice.
  • Coordinate provider scheduling and manage office schedules, including call and hospital coverage.
  • Ensure quality, safety, productivity, and operational efficiency within the Gastroenterology practice.
  • Encourage and support innovative solutions for more efficient problem-solving.
  • Work with team leaders to develop and review annual performance evaluations for all providers and APPs.
  • Advocate for the needs of clinicians and care team members while holding the organization accountable for its commitments.
  • Communicate organizational needs to clinicians and staff, ensuring accountability for individual commitments.
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of organizational policies and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate teaching activities for residents and medical students, as well as professional development for physicians and APPs.
  • Collaborate with the administrative leader and MHMG Patient Safety and Risk Management to address patient concerns.
  • Implement and monitor quality programs across the site in partnership with the team.
  • Conduct peer reviews.
  • Perform additional duties as mutually agreed upon with your medical leader.
