A CNC Lathe Operator specializes in turning operations—machining cylindrical parts using computer-controlled lathes. They interpret technical drawings, Operates machines, and ensure's precision production of metal or plastic components.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate CNC lathes (turning centers)
  • Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings
  • Load raw materials and monitor machining processes
  • Adjust machine offsets, tooling, and speeds for optimal performance
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using measuring tools
  • Maintain tight tolerances (often within ±0.002 inches or better)
  • Change inserts, tooling, and fixtures as needed
  • Troubleshoot machining issues (tool wear, chatter, dimensional errors)
  • Keep machines clean and follow preventive maintenance procedures
  • Document production runs and quality checks

  • Strong understanding of CNC turning principles
  • Ability to read and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Knowledge of feeds, speeds, and cutting material
  • Blueprint reading and math skills (trigonometry often helpful)
  • Attention to detail and quality control
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED (minimum)
  • Technical certificate or associate degree in machining (preferred)
  • 3–5+ years CNC lathe experience (varies by employer)
  • Apprenticeships or on-the-job training are common pathways
Physical & Work Conditions
  • Standing for long periods
  • Lifting materials (often 25–50 lbs)
  • Exposure to noise, coolant, and metal chips
